When I was a kid in the 1940s, we had the Artistry in Rhythm at home and I loved those records (old 78s, no less!). But my favorite album is Kenton playing Wagner. His little 16 piece brass orchestra really brings out Wagner's contemporarity (is that a word?).

Yes, I think it was Bing Crosby. This version is good, but it's so "happy". Bing's was heartfelt. Like you could feel the melancholy joy of having been through the hell of war, but finally coming back to your sweetheart and letting some of the healing begin.

Indeed it's been a long, long time since the days the Americans were very proud of their culture and looked to the future with admirable confidence in themselves and straightforward optimism.

There is a similar version of the song performed by the beautiful Kitty Kallen with the Harry James band. I love it but, of course, the kenton reed section, wow, man, it's the endsville!

Yu1Yam, you're absolutely right. the value of "soft power" has been flushed down the drain. In the 60's the State Department regularly sponsored tours od American jazz musicians all over the world. I'm proud to to have been a part of Benny Goodman's historic "Mission to Moscow" in 1962 and Earl "Fatha" Hines tour of the USSR in 1966.
