and if you think this is good, wait til you hear her sing the (original) German version ("Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind"). It was first sung by Marlene Dietrich during World War II, and translated (losing a certain amount of lyrical beauty) by Pete Seeger. Joan Baez singing this German anti-war song - in the original and exquisite German - it does not get much more breath-taking than this! You can find it by searching on YouTube

Wonder why Marlene always performed and recorded the Seeger version. What melody did she use in WWII since Seeger hadn't written this one yet? This song (that Seeger wrote) was based on a German poem, but the song had not been written in WWII.

I first heard this song as a child and didn't realize it was an anti-war song until I heard it years later.
Joan's poignant voice does justice to the sentiments of this song. Love it!

You are misinformed. Pete Seeger's inspiration was a Russian poem, not a German folksong. Marlene Dietrich did not record this in WWII, but in 1962, in French and then in German, both translated from Seeger's words. Joan Baez sang the exact same German words that Marlene sang.

This was a tribute to Seeger, so she sang the verses Seeger wrote. The other two verses were written by someone else.
