Actually such places DO exist. There's a handful of tribes in remote areas of the planet like tropical forests and isolated islands that still live a very traditional lifestyle.
Wether or not they're happier or less happy is hard to say I suppose! But when you live of hunting and gathering there's at most some barter going on. Much as people did before they started minting coins.
