One of the most important events in sports, not just because he prevails but also because Greg Lemond ushers in the modern era of cycling to the world!

Fignon had an excruciatingly painful saddle sore which made it hard for him even to sit - look at the way he keeps shifting in his saddle.
But that, along with tri-bars, helmets and a million other things, is part of the Tour; you race fate, the course and yourself just as much as you do your competitors.
1989 was also the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. The French would have loved to have had a French winner that year. At least they got one with a French surname....

such a travesty that fignon lost the tour to the lemoan. He was definitely the better man

when the "89 tour de france" happened i remember it like it was yesterday, and that was an event that took over that summer. yes lemond used the different handlebars, but what i haven't seen anyone write, look at the two teams. Fignon was on a top 4 team, lemond was all by himself, now after seeing the modern "tour" what would a rider do today with a team all by himself.

that is true.... Greg was the best American ever. Armstrong was awsome, but he did not face the field class that Greg faced. Indurain, Rominger, Pantani, etc were on their way out when Armstrong started winning. He really didnt have many credible riders to race against compared to lemond.

people are so ignorant; they don't understand that athlethes naturally produce EPO. Just by riding ur bike a lot you produce a lot of EPO. Your body actually develops more if your a professional. If your a professional and you inject EPO into your system; eventually your system produces less EPO and relies on the injected EPO. So the truth is in the short run ( a race or 2 ) EPO could help but over the long tour its not going to decide it.

Don't know... what about ullrich... vino and all?
comparation between generations is always a hard thing.
But, LeMond raced with a weak team, Armstrong had a good squad supporting him.

There was so much history to this duel, not the least of which was Fignoun getting to ride and winning the '83 Tour while Greg, who was the same age as Fignoun and a teammate on the Renault team, had to wait another year before making his Tour debut. To think that Greg took down Hinault in '86 and Fignoun in '89 is simply astonishing. Props to Greg and Andy Hampsten and the 7-11 team for WINNING in the 1980s and truly paving the way for Lance and his generation a decade later.

I cannot believe the average speed Lemond put out on this ride (around 34.5 mph). That's like a sprinting speed for me.

The greatest Tour de France ever !! Fignon even though he lost by 8 seconds he still look VERY VERY Hard to beat - Fignon looks very POWERFUL at the START ! They said Lemond even with his AERO Bars Lemond still only had a 1 / 100 chance of winnning !

Greatest Tour EVER! ... ( 1 week ago by 905euclid)
Greatest Tour EVER! There is much talk about the "aero vantage" Lemond had this year, and how that made the difference. For one thing, that is part of the cycling, and if you fail to embrace new technology, you're a lesser cyclist. Second, it wouldn't have mattered. Like any great champion, Greg was able to rise to whatever level was necessary to win. Greg LeMond was NOT going to lose this tour. Had Fignon been a minute quicker, so too would have LeMond.
